Important Concussion Information
In June of 2010 the legislature of Massachusetts adopted into law Bill S.2469: "An Act relating to safety regulations for school athletic programs". The task of setting regulations for this law fell to the DPH and the result was 105 CMR 201.000, a stringent program for head injury management, specifically concussions. Concussions and other brain related trauma can be serious and potentially life threatening. However, if managed properly, most athletes can enjoy participation in sports after sustaining a concussion. MURSD has developed procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of all student athletes. It is the responsibility of athletes and families to familiarize themselves with the MURSD district policy (SF, 3.6) regarding concussion management, specifically “return to play.” The full concussion management and medical protocols are available from the athletic training staff. This program is a software tool designed to help our athletic trainer, school nurse, and physicians evaluate and treat head injuries. This computerized exam is given to athletes before beginning contact sport practice or competition. This non-invasive test takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration. If a concussion is suspected, the athlete will be required to re-take the test. The test data will help health professionals to determine when return-to-play is appropriate. While ImPACT testing is not mandatory, it is highly recommended that all student-athletes participate. ImPACT testing is now part of the Introduction to Wellness curriculum (grade 9). When performing ImPACT testing, take the test in a quiet room with no distractions.
